Editor’s note 2/6/2013: Pending an FDA decision, 23andMe no longer offers new customers access to health reports referred to in this post. Customers who received their health information prior to November 22, 2013 will still be able to see their health reports, but those who purchased after that time will only have access to ancestry information as well as access to their uninterpreted raw data. These new customers may receive health reports in the future dependent on FDA marketing authorization.
While the fact that 23andMe started airing commercials for the first time is in-and-of itself new, we don’t want you to miss something else that is unique about this campaign.
Each of the actors used in the commercials tested with 23andMe. Like our customers they each wanted to explore their own DNA. The scripts for the commercials were written around the actors’ results. So these are stories that follow pretty closely with what a typical customer would experience when they test.
So for the actress Jenni her results gave her a sense of empowerment. While the test confirmed some potential health issues she already knew she had, testing also alerted her to other things she may not have know about otherwise. She said the results offered her and her doctor a chance to work out a plan to keep her healthy.
This is an example of what we hear from customers all the time. The results give them the tools they need to take charge of their own health. Getting results of potential risks allows customers to change what they can and mitigate what they can’t.
