Here’s some good news if you’re among the millions of people in the United States with a healthcare Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Saving Account (HSA): 23andMe health offerings may be fully or partially eligible for <a href="https://www.23andme.com/fsa-hsa/">use of FSA or HSA dollars</a>. 
23andMe’s health offerings include health reports, features, and services that are part of <a href="https://www.23andme.com/dna-health-ancestry/">23andMe Health + Ancestry Service</a>, <a href="https://www.23andme.com/membership/">23andMe+ Premium</a>™ and <a href="https://www.23andme.com/total-health/">23andMe+ Total Health</a>.™ In addition, clinical lab tests and clinician fees coordinated through 23andMe are part of 23andMe’s health offerings. (See below for more detail on each of these services.)
<h2>IRS Changes to FSA and HSA in 2023 </h2>
Before diving into all that is eligible under 23andMe’s umbrella of offerings, knowing more about these flexible pre-tax spending accounts and what’s new is essential.
The IRS has significantly increased the amount of pre-tax income people can set aside in the two most common types of these accounts — Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) and Health Saving Accounts (HSA). Like retirement savings accounts that allow people to save money with pre-tax income, these accounts are also pre-tax but earmarked for medical expenses. You can find out more about the two types of accounts <a href="https://www.irs.gov/government-entities/federal-state-local-governments/where-can-i-learn-more-about-health-savings-accounts-hsa-and-health-reimbursement-arrangements-hra">here</a>.*
The IRS recently increased the amount people can set aside for both of these types of accounts; for instance, individuals can set aside up to $3,850 in pre-tax income for the HSA account, while families can set aside $7,750.*
You can use this money for all sorts of “qualified medical expenses,” from co-pays for doctor’s visits to prescription medications to glasses and sunscreen. 
Are 23andMe’s health offerings a qualified medical expense? Yes, they are. Not too long ago, the <a href="https://permalinks.23andme.com/pdf/IRS_PLR132576_18.pdf?_gl=1*1crr0o3*_ga*MTYzNzM2NzYyNy4xNjcwODY5Nzcy*_ga_G330GF3ZFF*MTcwMTcwMjIwNy4xMjUuMS4xNzAxNzAyMjY3LjAuMC4w">IRS ruled </a>that you can use FSA or HSA money for 23andMe’s health offerings.
<h2>23andMe Services That Are FSA/HSA Eligible</h2>
The Internal Revenue Service also ruled in 2019 that the health portion of the cost of the 23andMe Health + Ancestry Service may be eligible. Customers can use our<a href="https://www.23andme.com/fsa-hsa-eligibility/calculator/"> FSA/HSA calculator </a>to determine how much is eligible. 
In 2021, 23andMe introduced the 23andMe Health Service which is FSA &amp; HSA eligible and includes health predisposition reports**, carrier status reports**, and wellness reports. The 23andMe Health Service is only available on the <a href="https://fsastore.com/23andme-health-only-service/32162.html">FSA/HSA store</a> and on <a href="https://www.amazon.com/23andMe-Health-Service-Including-Predispositions/dp/B09JFV4Z95?maas=maas_adg_9355566F4DC6DBE77B3FBD8B090C0C24_afap_abs&amp;ref_=aa_maas&amp;tag=maas">Amazon’s FSA/HSA store</a>. 
Now much more of 23andMe’s health offerings are eligible. Customers can use money from these accounts to cover such things as clinical lab tests and clinician fees coordinated through 23andMe and may also be able to apply funds from their FSA or HSA accounts to upgrade to 23andMe&#8217;s Health + Ancestry Service, 23andMe+ Premium, or 23andMe+ Total Health, which are considered eligible expenses. In addition, the IRS allows customers to use FSA/HSA funds for a portion (up to $189†) of the cost of the <a href="https://www.23andme.com/dna-health-ancestry/">23andMe Health + Ancestry Service</a>.

23andMe Health Offerings Are FSA & HSA Eligible

Our customers have redefined prevention for us over the years. Hundreds of them have written to us, telling stories of how they’ve become the hero of their health journey. 



We are continually so inspired by their stories we recently launched a new campaign called The Hero Gene that celebrates some of those customers in their own words.



<h6 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-kenzie-and-shannon-s-brca1-story">Kenzie and Shannon’s BRCA1 Story</h6>



Kenzie and her mom, Shannon, are closer than the average mother and daughter, sharing a love of traveling together and their favorite foods. Kenzie knew there was Ashkenazi Jewish heritage in her background, but with no family history of breast cancer, she did not think there was a need to get screening for BRCA variants. Through 23andMe’s BRCA1/BRCA2 (Selected Variants) Genetic Health Risk Report,* Kenzie learned she had a BRCA1 variant that put her at a greatly increased risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer.

Women with one of these variants have a <a href="https://www.23andme.com/brca">45-85 percent chance</a> of developing breast cancer and up to a 46 percent chance of developing ovarian cancer by age 70. One of her first thoughts was, “Could my mom have cancer and not know it?” 



Kenzie immediately knew she had to call her mom.&nbsp;&nbsp;



“Mom, I have this gene, and I think you need to get tested.” 



Shannon made an appointment with her oncologist, where she shared the news about Kenzie’s report.  The oncologist referred her to a genetic counselor, who immediately set Shannon up for genetic testing. In addition, the genetic counselor suggested Kenzie talk to her doctor right away for follow-up testing.  After doing so, both were able to take steps to minimize their risks. While Kenzie is opting to go for a less aggressive route of frequent scans and discussing family planning options, Shannon (a cancer survivor) decided to go ahead with preventative surgeries to lower her risk of developing BRCA-associated cancers.

The experience has taught both women how important it is to educate themselves about their health risks, to be proactive about their well-being, and to advocate for themselves to ensure they get the care they need.&nbsp;



“Kenzie’s test and me being able to find out that I was BRCA positive was lifesaving,” said Shannon.&nbsp;



As they prepare to share another holiday together, closer than ever, Kenzie couldn’t help but beam when talking about Shannon, “I&#8217;m really proud of my mom, she&#8217;s taken her health into her hands. Her life is the most important thing to me. She wanted to show me that she will survive.”

<h6 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-melissa-s-f5-story">Melissa’s F5 Story</h6>



Melissa developed symptoms of a pulmonary embolism (PE), a blood clot in the lung, after a cross-country flight from Washington to Boston for a nurses conference. As a nurse, Melissa knew her symptoms weren&#8217;t typical but knowing she had an increased likelihood to develop harmful blood clots based on a factor V Leiden variant found by her 23andMe Hereditary Thrombophilia Genetic Health Risk report* prompted her to go to the ER before taking a return flight home.

Trusting her nurse’s instinct, she pushed to get evaluated a PE. 



“I am not typically … insistent, but I was really insistent on this. I am absolutely sure it&#8217;s going to happen again and I may not have another chance. And I wasn&#8217;t willing to take that chance again.” They confirmed via a blood test and CAT scan that she had developed a PE.

She began taking a blood thinner right away so she could fly home. Melissa credits her knowledge of the gene with empowering her to take her health into her own hands, which means even more this time of year.  “My family is sacred to me. It truly is all that matters. I would not have been able to meet my new granddaughter. I truly believe I’m here because of 23andMe. Because I was aware of that gene, and my doctors were aware of that gene, that continues to save my life.”

The variants included in this report do not represent the majority of the BRCA1/BRCA2 variants in people of most ethnicities. This report does not include variants in other genes linked to hereditary cancers and the absence of variants included in this report does not rule out the presence of other genetic variants that may impact cancer risk. This report is for over-the-counter use by adults over the age of 18, and provides genetic information to inform discussions with a healthcare professional. The PGS test is not a substitute for visits to a healthcare professional for recommended screenings or appropriate follow-up. Good health depends on a good night’s rest, but in the wee hours, sleep eludes many of us; some estimates suggest that as many as<a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28348990/"> 30 percent of adults</a> have insomnia, defined as an inability to fall asleep at least three times a week over several months.



Many factors, such as stress, certain medications, poor sleep hygiene, or alcohol or caffeine close to bedtime, can play a role in why some of us toss and turn each night. But genetics also influences our ability to sleep.



This week, 23andMe released a new Insomnia report (Powered by 23andMe Research) and available to 23andMe+ Premium members.



<h6 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-about-the-report">About the Report</h6>



The new 23andMe+ report on insomnia uses data from people who have consented to participate in 23andMe research. Leveraging this data, we use machine learning techniques to estimate an individual’s likelihood of developing insomnia.



The estimates factor in that data and use statistical modeling that includes thousands of genetic markers and information on an individual’s ethnicity and birth sex. Together, all this data is used to calculate the genetic likelihood of developing&nbsp; insomnia. Customers can learn more about the science and methodology behind our new report in this<a href="https://permalinks.23andme.com/pdf/23_21-PRSMethodology_May2020.pdf"> white paper</a>.



The report provides users with helpful information on their estimated genetic likelihood of developing insomnia, but it is not a substitute for clinical diagnosis or treatment.



<h6 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-is-insomnia">What is Insomnia?</h6>



All of us struggle to get to sleep occasionally, but insomnia causes persistent problems with not just falling asleep but staying asleep. Insomnia can last a few days or weeks, but when it lasts more than three months or more, it is considered chronic.



Beyond external factors like stress, diet, or medication, scientists are still trying to understand the genetics of insomnia fully.



<a href="https://blog.23andme.com/articles/genetics-of-insomnia-more-similar-to-psychiatric-conditions-than-to-other-sleep-traits">Insomnia</a> is highly polygenic, meaning many different genes are associated with the condition. Still, several studies have narrowed down on a combination of genetic factors that contribute to the disruption of the sleep-wake cycle or change the chemical cycles in the brain that control sleep. In 2022, 23andMe collaborated with researchers at Vrije University in Amsterdam that included data from more than 2.3 million individuals and identified<a href="https://blog.23andme.com/articles/insomnia-study"> 289 genetic variants associated with insomnia</a>.



The impact of sleep or the lack of sleep has been well studied. The more obvious symptoms are daytime drowsiness, low energy, and trouble concentrating or remembering things. Drowsiness itself contributes to other public safety issues, such as<a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5831237/"> car accidents</a>. But insomnia can also impact mental health. It’s associated with depression and anxiety, for instance. Long-term insomnia is also associated with health conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease, and diabetes.&nbsp;



For people who have chronic insomnia, <a href="https://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/insomnia/treatment">treatment</a> with cognitive behavioral therapy and lifestyle modifications can help address the causes of insomnia. In extreme cases, doctors may recommend sleep-aid medications that can help too.



<h6 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-more-on-sleep">More on Sleep</h6>



Sleep allows our bodies and brains to shut down and rest. But there is more going on during sleep, especially during the various stages of sleep, each linked to different electrical patterns in our brains that all likely play an essential role in health.



There are two types of sleep — rapid eye movement or REM sleep and non-REM sleep. Non-REM sleep is often where we begin, and it is characterized by a slowing down of your heart rate and breathing but a period during which you are more easily awakened.&nbsp;



There are different stages of non-REM sleep, with each stage characterized by slower brain waves; the <a href="https://blog.23andme.com/articles/sleepy-time">deepest stage of non-REM sleep</a> includes periods with very low frequency waves, known as Delta waves, and is considered restorative.



You dream during REM sleep. The stage is characterized not just by rapid eye movement but also by rapid breathing and heart rate and blood pressure increases. Typically, a person enters REM sleep an hour or an hour after falling asleep, lasting about 10 minutes to an hour. After REM sleep, the process repeats. Typically, about a fifth of our sleep is REM sleep. 



Dreams and REM sleep help with learning and making memories. Other stages of sleep, for instance, are crucial for creating pathways for learning and remembering.



Researchers are still trying to understand why sleep is so essential. 23andMe scientists and their collaborators have looked at several components of sleep, including <a href="https://journals.plos.org/plosgenetics/article?id=10.1371/journal.pgen.1006125">wake times</a>,<a href="https://research.23andme.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/Y_Huang_ASHG18_final.pdf"> sleep apnea,</a> and <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S019745802030124X?via%3Dihub">REM sleep</a>.



<h6 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-more-23andme-reports-on-sleep">More 23andMe Reports on Sleep</h6>



23andMe also offers customers various sleep-related reports. Those include wellness reports on deep sleep, sleep movement, and 23andMe+ reports (Powered by 23andMe Research) on obstructive sleep apnea and restless leg syndrome. These different sleep-related issues could affect sleep patterns and contribute to restlessness.



In 2021, during the height of the COVID pandemic, 23andMe conducted <a href="https://blog.23andme.com/articles/covid-impact-on-sleep">a sleep survey</a>, which found that the pandemic had a profound impact on sleep. It was also consistent with other published studies during the period. Another<a href="https://nutrition.bmj.com/content/4/1/132"> study published in 2021</a> noted that sleep disruption and stress among healthcare workers during the pandemic were also associated with a higher risk of infection and more severe symptoms from COVID-19. However, broad population-wide changes in sleep patterns are relatively easy to study.&nbsp;



Along with the new 23andMe+ Insomnia report (Powered by 23andMe Research), 23andMe also has a collection of other sleep-related reports. Some are included in the 23andMe+ Premium membership, such as the Obstructive Sleep Apnea and the Restless Leg Syndrome reports (Powered by 23andMe Research). But 23andMe’s Health + Ancestry Service also includes sleep-related Wellness reports, including reports on Deep Sleep, Sleep Movement, and Wake-Up Time. Each is meant to look at how your genetics may play a role in the quality of your sleep.

New Genetic Report on Insomnia

Your partner’s sleeping patterns often influence your own, whether you like it or not, <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s42003-023-05521-7.epdf?sharing_token=Sfu-Tt6qN6blH0kfaZfepdRgN0jAjWel9jnR3ZoTv0P-7SY3VDosErXW6Rhl-_I8fBRo2ZauE5Kr2RBMtp7mJyeHttuHukCcu3i6bSLAmolisBRZyk1jKpVxwlmFdmAbkRiIXpKlYA3lWVUY12W8u5Hp6gt9u88x47ZRUNlX5Xk%3D">a new study</a> has found.



Using data from more than 47,000 couples who are part of the <a href="https://www.ukbiobank.ac.uk/learn-more-about-uk-biobank">UK Biobank</a> and then replicated using data from 127,000 couples who consented to participate in <a href="https://research.23andme.com/publications/#publications">23andMe research</a>, scientists from the University of Bristol found that couples were correlated in numerous aspects of sleep such as how long the sleep, whether they wake up early or go to bed late and even how restless they are in the night.&nbsp;



Not only this, but the research used genetic data to show that these correlations were likely to be causal, meaning that partners were influencing each other’s sleep patterns.&nbsp;



The study found that people who slept for longer tended to have partners who also had a longer night’s sleep, and that bedtime and wake-up times were aligned between couples. However, couples differed based on their “chronotype” — their morning or evening preference – meaning if one was a morning person, the other tended to be a night owl. The researchers also noted that those with insomnia tended to be more likely to report snoring by their partner.&nbsp;



There is a lot packed into the study. Some of it touches on what is called assortative mating — the notion that we’re more likely to partner up with people with similar traits. But more importantly, it also reveals that couples who are different in their sleep preferences and traits could, over time, adopt the sleep patterns of their partner. The study suggests that in the long term, there’s a convergence among couples in how long they sleep.&nbsp;



“This highlights the importance of considering both partners in sleep health interventions,” said <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/people/person/Rebecca-Richmond-9acc2c80-6921-4ce6-93be-43766b1ac185/">Rebecca C Richmond, Ph.D</a>., lead author of the study and a senior research fellow in Molecular Epidemiology at the University of Bristol.&nbsp;



The study used an impressive range of data on sleep, not just based on questionnaire measures but also genetic data and movement data from wearable devices. The study is also significant for its size. Sleep studies involving couples tend to include just a few hundred couples, whereas this involves two separate research cohorts with tens of thousands of individuals.

Couples Shape Each Others Sleep

Genetic counselors are an integral part of 23andMe, including a role in helping to shape many health related reports, features and services we offer. In honor of Genetic Counselor Awareness Day we’re highlighting their role at 23andMe and the important role genetic counselors play within healthcare more broadly.



<h6 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-do-genetic-counselors-do">What do genetic counselors do?</h6>



Genetic counselors have specialized training and education in both medical genetics and counseling. As their professional title suggests, genetic counselors lean upon their background training in counseling skills to help people looking for support to interpret and understand their test results.&nbsp;



We are proud to have six genetic counselors in various roles at 23andMe. While 23andMe genetic counselors do not provide individual genetic counseling services to our millions of customers, they work as a team to make access to genetic information possible on a large scale.&nbsp;

<h6 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-would-i-need-to-go-to-a-genetic-counselor-nbsp">Why would I need to go to a genetic counselor?&nbsp;</h6>



There are several reasons you might benefit from meeting with a genetic counselor or other healthcare professional with training in genetics–if you’re seeking to better understand a test result, for example, or have a known genetic condition in your family. You might also meet with a genetic counselor if you are planning to start a family and are concerned about an inherited condition or are working with a fertility specialist and considering genetic testing as part of the process.&nbsp;



Here are a few more reasons: If you have a family history of cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, a heart disorder, or another genetic condition, a genetic counselor may help you better understand what that specific history might mean for your own risks or for others in your family. Some people seek out genetic counseling after having a genetic test and learning that they have a genetic variant that puts them at a higher risk for a condition.&nbsp;



In all of these cases, genetic counselors can help you explore what the next steps might be for you and your family.&nbsp;



<h6 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-where-can-i-find-a-genetic-counselor-to-work-with-individually">Where can I find a genetic counselor to work with individually?</h6>



There are several resources out there for you if you might be considering or interested in working with a genetic counselor one-on-one. Our post on <a href="https://blog.23andme.com/health-traits/report-for-healthcare-provider/">sharing your 23andMe report with your healthcare provider</a> helps 23andMe customers get started on the path. Customers may also work with a clinician that delivers genetics-informed services through the 23andMe and Lemonaid Health platforms. This is a group of healthcare professionals who have received specific training to answer questions about a growing number of 23andMe reports.&nbsp;&nbsp;



Another option is to search the <a href="https://www.findageneticcounselor.com/">Find A Genetic Counselor</a> tool developed by the National Society of Genetic Counselors. There is also a directory of genetic counselors on the <a href="https://abgc.learningbuilder.com/Search/Public/MemberRole/Verification">American Board of Genetic Counseling</a> site. Finally, your doctor or other healthcare professional can assist in making a referral to a genetic counselor in your area.

Genetic Counselor Awareness Day 2023

Since 2019, 23andMe customers have had the option to utilize authenticator app 2-factor authentication, which adds an extra layer of security to their account. Starting today, we are requiring all customers use a second step of verification to sign into their account.&nbsp;



<h6 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-is-2-step-verification">What is 2-Step Verification?</h6>



2-step verification (2SV), also referred to as 2-factor authentication, requires customers to provide two distinct steps to sign in before accessing their accounts. In combination with a username and password, customers will be asked for a verification code. 



Depending on what method customers choose to use, that code will either be generated by an authenticator app, or sent to their email if they use email 2-step verification. This code is another way to verify the customer’s identity before accessing their account.



<h6 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-setting-up-2-step-verification">Setting Up 2-Step Verification</h6>



New customers will be automatically enrolled in email 2SV when they create their account. Existing customers who do not already use an authenticator app will also be automatically enrolled in email 2SV, and will receive an email containing their verification code at their next sign-in. 



Existing customers who already use an authenticator app, can continue to use that option. New customers who want to use an authenticator app, such as Google Authenticator™ mobile app, instead of email 2SV, can set up the authenticator app using the instructions found <a href="https://customercare.23andme.com/hc/en-us/articles/360034119874-Adding-2-Step-Verification-to-Your-23andMe-Account">here</a>.

Enhanced Customer Security at 23andMe with 2-Step Verification

This week, 23andMe launched Health Action Plan, a new digital feature that combines genetic data, health history, and biomarkers from bloodwork to offer personalized recommendations for better health for 23andMe+ Premium members.

<h6 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tailored-recommendations">Tailored Recommendations</h6>



Health Action Plan can help customers take the next step for prevention, early detection of risk, and give people a path forward in their health journey. It offers customers personalized, specific actions and next steps. 23andMe created this new feature partly because many of our customers said they wanted help prioritizing what steps they should focus on to mitigate risk and optimize their health.



“We frequently hear from customers that they want to take action based on their genetic health information but don&#8217;t know where to start,” said Robin Smith, Ph.D., Director of 23andMe Product Management. “Health Action Plan provides them with a prioritized to-do list of recommendations based on their DNA or other self-reported health history that&#8217;s updated as new reports are released or as the science changes.”



The personalized recommendations from Health Action Plan are based on U.S. guidelines, and will help 23andMe+ Premium members focus on what’s most important for their health, and then give them actionable steps they can take to help improve their own health journey.



<h6 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-more-than-just-genetics">More than Just Genetics</h6>



This new feature is like a genetic check-up, but it includes much more than DNA data.



With a customer’s consent, Health Action Plan draws on genetic health reports as well as a person’s self-reported health history and blood test results. Together, this data helps inform tailored recommendations, prioritizing what are the most important steps for a customer to take. As customers answer health survey questions, 23andMe will be able to expand the breadth of recommendations made to customers, offering further insights on actions they should take next.



Health Action Plan also works in tandem with the other features such as the self reported health history and or answers to survey questions as well as features such as <a href="https://blog.23andme.com/articles/stay-on-track-with-23andme-health-tracks">Health Tracks</a>SM.

Health Tracks uses data visualization to allow 23andMe+ Premium members see how making healthy changes, including taking steps recommended through Health Action Plan, could significantly bend the risk curve over time and steer them toward healthier outcomes, even for those with a higher genetic likelihood of developing one of those conditions.



<h6 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-recommendations">Recommendations</h6>



Health Action Plan might include recommendations around diet, or reducing stress, improving sleep, or other lifestyle changes. But based on genetics in combination with non-genetic risk factors, Health Action Plan may also help identify the need for a customer to talk to a doctor or for more clinical services.



So, for example, if an individual’s&nbsp; genetic health predisposition is an&nbsp; increased likelihood for developing high triglycerides, a recommendation might be to get a blood test that looks at triglycerides and other lipids. This is important because while high triglycerides often have no symptoms, they can be a risk factor not just for heart disease but can be part of something called<a href="https://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/metabolic-syndrome"> metabolic syndrome</a>. Metabolic syndromes increase the risk for serious conditions like heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes.



For individuals with an increased likelihood for developing high triglycerides or who do currently have high triglycerides or other lipids, there are steps one can take including changes in diet and lifestyle that could help.

<h6 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-23andme-and-blood-testing-nbsp">23andMe and Blood Testing &nbsp;</h6>



Eligible <a href="https://www.23andme.com/membership/">23andMe+ Premium</a> members may have the ability to have a healthcare provider order a lab test, and return results with a clinical analysis through the 23andMe experience.* 



A clinician ordered lab test can be done through the 23andMe experience and is both intuitive and simple. The test itself will be done at a local lab. Once the results are completed, customers will be able to not just view their results, but also have the opportunity to get a clinical analysis of your results from a Lemonaid Health clinician — Lemonaid Health is a telemedicine company owned by 23andMe. In addition, by adding this kind of bloodwork and biomarker data, customers can receive additional tailored recommendations that can be even further prioritized and continue to help identify potential health risks.&nbsp;



While the new Health Action Plan might suggest getting additional lab tests or consulting with a healthcare provider, customers will also get lifestyle recommendations about things like diet and exercise.



If a customer wishes they can also dismiss or silent certain recommendations.



It’s important to note that none of the recommendations should be used to replace a visit to a primary care physician.

This initial release of Health Action Plan is part of 23andMe’s continued push to create genetically informed care for our customers. It aligns with our mission of empowering our customers by helping them access, understand, and benefit from the human genome.
