In the latest update to 23andMe’s Ancestry Composition report, we’ve added finer detail for customers with South Asian ancestry, allowing them to trace their family connections back to 44 genetic groups corresponding to regions within India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal and Afghanistan.
The update affects the majority of customers with South Asian ancestry, and over one percent of all customers who tested on our latest genotyping chip.
South Asia is the most populous region in the world and also very diverse, home to several hundred languages and various different religious and cultural practices. Now, in addition to six Ancestry Composition populations in South Asia, customers can see if they are connected via shared ancestors to some of the diverse groups in the region.
Ancestry Composition Update
23andMe’s Ancestry Composition report is a living analysis that improves as we add new reference data. Underlying our Ancestry reports are powerful algorithms and analytical tools developed by 23andMe population geneticists and engineers to offer our customers more insights into their ancestral origins.
Recently, we’ve updated results for people with connections to Greece and the Balkans, early colonial Americans, African Americans, Japan, and Scandinavia for instance.
